SEEK Survey Of Employee Satisfaction Reveals We’re Not All “Happy Campers”

EastCoast Human Resource Group Research conducted by seek.com.au (1), Australia’s largest employment web site, offers an insight into what factors influence employee job satisfaction and retention in the workplace. The findings of the 2003 SEEK Survey of Employee Satisfaction and Motivation in Australia include;

1.   Almost half of the 6500 respondents report they are unhappy or very unhappy in their current job. The size of the company people work for makes no difference to the overall level of satisfaction.
2.   When respondents were asked what they loved about their job, 54% said “the people I work with” followed by “variety and content of work” 41% “hours of work” 38% and “salary” 26%. Fewer than 20% said they disliked the people they work with.
3.   Government employees were almost twice as likely as people in other sectors to report they love their benefits and conditions of employment.
4.   Six out of 10 people cited “quality of management” when asked if there’s anything they hate about their job. Nearly half of respondents cite lack of career development, stress levels, feedback and appreciation and salary. Men were more likely than women to be dissatisfied with job security, career development and hours of work.
5.   Fully 96% of respondents were willing, to some extent, to consider new employment opportunities. Half of those surveyed said they were actively looking for another job whilst 22% said they were “thinking of changing jobs but hadn’t started actively looking“. 24% said they “would consider changing jobs if the right one came along.

A survey form has been designed by the EastCoast Human Resource Group to help you anonymously measure your employees’ perception of their workplace and identify what are the favourable aspects of their current role as well as what they hate about their job.

If you would like to conduct the survey within your firm please call Donna Hamer on 5443 6022 for a copy of the survey document. Should you require any assistance with this survey, for example, collating and interpreting survey results, just ask, we’d be delighted to help.
