There' s no such thing as a lifetime job guarantee.
Just 10 years ago, people could reasonably expect a lifetime job guarantee and accepted the fact that they would work in a specific occupation or industry for the best part of their working life. People also took a certain amount of comfort in the predictability of their working life and the peace of mind that security of tenure offered.
Nowadays, it’s normal to change jobs every three to five years or even more frequently in some occupations. In fact, the average worker can expect four or five complete occupational changes during the course of their working life.
Take my situation as a classic example - after graduating from a private boarding school and with no idea what I wanted to do, I worked as a jackeroo, trained as an Army Officer, worked as a bus conductor, spent 10 years in the public sector, recruited Accounting and Finance Executives in Sydney, managed a division of the AMP Group of Companies and for the past 10 years have been self employed as the Director of the Coast’s oldest private recruitment agency, the EastCoast Human Resource Group. I still have twenty working years ahead of me and goodness knows what I will be doing with myself over that time.
This means you need to become an expert in managing your own career you need to know what you want to do in your working life and how you’re going to get there! You need skills, knowledge and self-understanding in areas such as:
· What are your key strengths?
· What are your personality traits and “job fit” needs?
· What jobs out there best suit you?
· How can you best go about finding out about interesting options?
· How can you evaluate and decide on your career goals?
· What are the best ways to go after what you want?
· How can you prepare powerful letters of application, a great resume and other self-marketing documents. In fact, you will need networking skills and how to best prepare yourself for that all important job interview.
Over 60% of jobs are never advertised. Relying on advertisements in the newspaper or on the Internet job boards is one of the least effective ways to get work.
To be really effective in your job search, you need to know what type of job you are best suited to so that you can implement a creative self-marketing campaign. The skills, knowledge and self-understanding to direct and manage your career are rarely learnt at school or even at university.
The EastCoast Human Resource Group recognised the need for a professional career services on the Coast through their recruitment work with thousands of job seekers and appointed Mitch Lawrie to head up their new Careers Division.
